Invisalign FAQs and Answers

TeamUncategorized

If you have misaligned teeth, you may be interested in orthodontic options. You may worry that traditional braces are uncomfortable and draw too much attention. Luckily, Invisalign treatment can help you straighten your smile and regain your self-confidence.

At Dental Associates, we understand that many of our patients have questions about the Invisalign process. We have answered our patients' most frequently asked questions to help you understand how this advanced treatment can help you.

How long does Invisalign take to work?

Most patients wear Invisalign for an average of 12 to 18 months, with some treatment times even shorter. Since traditional braces generally take about 18 months to three years, you can enjoy your new smile more quickly with Invisalign.

Can teens wear Invisalign?

Invisalign is an excellent option for responsible teens who are highly motivated to improve their smiles. They should be able to follow directions, practice good oral hygiene skills, and wear their aligners for the required number of hours each day.

For how long should I wear my aligners each day?

Invisalign aligners need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, including during sleep. Remove them only to eat, drink, and care for your teeth.

How do I take care of my aligners?

Every time you eat or drink anything but water, take your aligners out and put them in their carrying case. After you eat, rinse your mouth thoroughly and brush your teeth.

To care for your aligners, brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, undyed antibacterial soap. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid using warm or hot water, as this can warp your aligners. Soak them with cleaning crystals once a week.

What should I do if I lose my aligners?

If you misplace or damage an aligner, notify your dentist immediately. If you go without your aligners for any length of time, you will lose progress in your treatment.

Can I eat with my aligners in?

When you eat, you must remove your aligners to avoid damage and stains.

Do clear aligners stain?

Yes, they can stain from cleaning agents and food. To keep them sparkling clean, follow your dentist's care instructions.

Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Yes, after you finish your Invisalign treatment, a retainer is a must. Retainers help the teeth settle into their new position. You may need to wear them all day at first and transition to wearing them only at night.

How does Invisalign treatment impact my oral health?

While braces can sometimes negatively impact oral health in patients with poor oral hygiene, Invisalign does not. Since you can take your aligners out to eat, drink, and clean your teeth, you'll have a healthier smile. Researchers find that Invisalign patients have better gum health than those wearing braces in the long term.
